terhadap fiber glass setiap tahun kian meningkat. Subtitusi baja dan kayu itu membuat bahan komposit tersebut laris manis di kalangan industri. Sayangnya, fiber glass merupakan material komposit yang tidak ramah lingkungan.

Untuk itu, Peneliti Departemen Fisika, Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (FMIPA) Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) Siti Nikmati pun mencetuskan fiber glass dengan bahan baku ramah lingkungan. Tidak lagi menggunakan minyak bumi, fiber glass besutan Siti menggunakan limbah kulit rotan.

“Masyarakat kini sedang mencari alternatif bahan komposit selain dari fiber glass. Diakui komposit filler fiber glass mempunyai berbagai keunggulan dan keistimewaan yang dapat menggantikan bahan logam, baja dan kayu. Karena keunggulannya ini, kebutuhan fiber glass tiap tahun terus meningkat dan bisa mencapai ratusan juta ton,” tutur Siti, seperti dikutip dari siaran pers yang diterima Okezone, Senin (22/7/2013).

Namun, lanjutnya, sifat fiber glass yang sintetis, tidak bisa didaur ulang dan berbahan dasar minyak bumi, merugikan alam yang berdampak pada global warming. Dalam jangka panjang pemakaian fiber glass secara berlebihan dapat membahayakan kesehatan manusia.

"Oleh karena itu, perlu ada terobosan berupa serat alam sebagai filler biokomposit yang berasal dari bahan-bahan alami seperti tumbuhan dan hewan. Khusus untuk tumbuhan, serat alam dapat ditemukan pada tanaman pertanian, perkebunan, dan hutan alami," jelasnya.

Menurut Siti, salah satu serat alam yang sangat potensial bisa menggantikan fungsi fiber glass pada komposit adalah selulosa kulit rotan. Apalagi mengingat ketersediaan bahan baku tersebut melimpah di Indonesia berdasarkan klaim Kementerian Perindustrian bahwa Indonesia adalah negara penghasil rotan terbesar di dunia.

Dia menyebut, hasil utama rotan adalah batang yang telah dihilangkan duri, kulit, dan pelepah daunnya. Setiap panen limbah kulit rotan mencapai 28,5-40 persen. Sementara kulit rotan menjadi limbah yang dapat dijadikan produk substitusi inovatif bernilai jual tinggi.

“Bayangkan bila produksi rotan 300 ribu ton maka limbah kulitnya bisa mencapai sekira 150 ribu ton. Ini peluang yang sangat besar,” papar Siti.

Bersama peneliti lain, yakni Y Aris Purwanto, Tineke Mandang, Akhirudin Maddu, dan tim dari PTBIN-BATAN Puspiptek Serpong Setyo Purwanto, Siti melakukan serangkaian penelitian tentang “Karakterisasi Selulosa Kulit Rotan Sebagai Material Pengganti Fiber Glass pada Komposit’.

Untuk menghasilkan fiber glass dari limbah kulit rotan diperlukan beberapa tahapan. Kulit rotan yang sudah dibersihkan dan ditimbang, selanjutnya direbus lalu dikeringkan. Kulit rotan dimasukkan ke kontainer yang didalamnya sudah diberi media padat, lalu ditaburkan kapang Aspergillus niger secara merata.

Hasilnya, ekstraksi selulosa dengan metode fermentasi Aspergillus niger dapat membentuk enzim yang dapat menghancurkan jaringan tanaman nonselulosa dan dapat memisahkan bahan penyusun serat dari sejumlah jaringan. “Hasil pengujian juga menunjukkan fiber kulit rotan cukup baik untuk menggantikan fiber glass sebagai filler pada biokomposit,” tandasnya.
